Canon GL1 for YouTube?
I would like to take some videos for my website and submit a few to YouTube. How does the Canon GL1 work? I have one I used to use a few years back and have not attempted to use it since 2007. How well does this camera work for this and what advice would you have for a microphone for this camera.
Thanks!

Re: Canon GL1 for YouTube?
Leo Laporte streams most of his shows online at sites such as ustream.tv or stickam.com and uses a Canon GL2 and four XL2s. The GL2 doesn't look too good when it comes to color but the XL2s are great. I also use the XL1 and XL1A all the time and love the video and color quality.
HOWEVER...with the whole HD video switch happening, you may want to go with a newer camera which shoots wide screen HD video. It's better to go with new gear from the start rather than upgrade often. Sony has the HDR-FX1000 HD MiniDV tape camera which is very nice.
I think Canon does a better job with the lenses and overall image quality compared to Sony. You can also swap lenses with the Canons however they seem a little heavy.
As for a mic, check out the Azden SGM1X shotgun.

Re: Canon GL1 for YouTube?
Thanks for the reply Dave. So I take it your opinion is the GL1 might be too old for today's video/online world? I appreciate the feedback!
Re: Canon GL1 for YouTube?
If you could get a great deal on a used Canon GL1, go for it...it's still better than some consumer brand mini cams. The newer cams will always produce a better image though and with FlashHD enabled on youtube you may want that better quality camera.
Re: Canon GL1 for YouTube?
Dave, Yes, I already own a GL1 that I purchased many years ago and only used a short time. I was really wanting to know if it is up to speed for filming a YouTube type video or if I need to be on the hunt for a new model.
Thanks!
