General Questions Empty General Questions

Post  Bilgola Fri Jun 21, 2013 11:13 pm

Hi, I'm a newbie to video production. My background is still photography and graphic arts/web building, so I apologise in advance if these questions have been answered many times before.

I find I have a need to produce web based video and realise I need some specialist equipment. My existing stuff is:

Canon 7d plus some quite good glass including, Canon 24-105mm L lens, 50mm 1.4 Prime which I hope will do.
Tripod
Rode VideoMic Pro

I now needs some lights and this I find quite challenging. The work I will be doing will be shot in studio. It will be mainly talking head stuff and I am leaning towards two softboxes and a fill light.
Cost is a consideration and I have a budget of $300.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Regards,

Mike

Hey Mike!

I personally use the following softbox kit in my studio: http://www.tubetape.net/servlet/the-192/220v-220/Detail

I did a review which can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VK5HBt39eE&list=PL008D029D9F1736CC&index=15

I find they are quite bright enough for most situations.  I would however suggest a smaller light for your hair/back light if you are in a smaller studio.  Also the stands are ok but if ou want to fly the third box in over your head, get a better stand such as a C-stand and some shotbags.

I personally use an LED panel for the back light in my studio but I have a low ceiling so I can't fit the third softbox in place.

Thanks for that info I had a look at the links and its all good information so thanks again. Since I'm in Australia and you are in USA I'm not sure if the exact product you suggest
is available here. But, the info was excellent and confirms that for me a good softbox is the way to go. I will probably buy two softboxes and also price out a small LED to use as a fill light.

With regard to lens...do you think my 50mm 1.4 is the best choice for this type of talking head work. I also have the 70-105mm f/4 which I think might work. Finally what processing software
do you recommend. I'm a Mac user (current iMac) and have iMovie which I have never used but think maybe a bit basic, what are you thoughts? I believe Final Cut Pro is much better
but is going to cost me a lot?.

Thanks again I appreciate you taking the time to give me your thoughts.

Regards,

Mike

The 50mm should work just fine.  Try both to see what style you like compared to the two.

Software depends on what needs to be done.  For most basic productions like talking head, you may be able to get by with iMovie however if you want something more to work with, Sony makes a line of affordable software that does a bit more and yet is lower in price than the common Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro.
