Camera used in videos/capture card? Empty Camera used in videos/capture card?

Post  NewEnglandMultimedia Thu Jan 22, 2009 1:16 am

Hello Mark,

Sony recommended that I purchase a capture card if I want to remove the slightly jagged edges around my chroma key video. Since your videos are the best I've seen on YouTube, I'm hoping you could tell me what video camera you used.

Also, did you use a capture card?

I'm using a Sony EX-3 and I'm surprised a camera of this quality would be limiting but I do understand the color sampling limitations with recording to the cards (due to compression) instead of SDI output.

I also find it strange that I would not be able to get true 4-4-4 sampling (full color) and only 4-2-2. Your thoughts?

Thanks for everything!

what exactly does song mean by a capture card? they could be refering to a firewire card which will give you the best picture quality or an analouge capture device whcih will decrease your video quality.

Yes usb and firewire can be considered capture cards.

But there are many other types of cards and hardware systems out there.

Matrox RT2500 - http://www.aboutvideoediting.com/hardware/Matrox-RT2500.shtml

Dazzle Hollywood DV-Bridge - http://www.aboutvideoediting.com/hardware/Dazzle-Hollywood-DVBridge.shtml

Digital Origin MotoDV - http://www.aboutvideoediting.com/hardware/Digital-Origin-MotoDV.shtml

These are just a few, pinnacle has a hardware solution as well.

Most of them use IEEE 1394 tech, but also have support for other methods like s-video and composite video.

As far as Sony saying that solution to your green screen problem being your capture device, not sure I can buy into that. Most issues are due to the lighting of the green screen and the placement of the actors to the green screen. I would balance my light, no shadows and move out at least 6 to 8 feet from the screen before I started chasing other options.

Hey everyone,

Firewire out of the EX-3 is compressed. The only true full resolution (uncompressed) out of the Sony EX-3 is SDI output (according to Sony). This was posted in another thread but I'll paste a quote directly from Sony (transcribed from a tech support call) -

"The color signal on the various formats - if you have an RGB signal, that would be considered a "4-4-4" sample. So for every 4 samples of red, there are 4 samples of green and 4 samples of blue (horizontally and vertically). In the higher-end products, where you would have component recordings, then you would have a 4-2-2 sampling (black and while sampled 4 times, the color signals would be sampled 2 times (vertically) and 2 times (horizontally). On the EX format (and other formats), it's sampled with a "4-2-0" sampling (the luminous sampled 4 times for every 2 times on the chroma (but the chroma is only sampled vertically - not sampled horizontally).

With 4-4-4, you have full color, with 4-2-2 you have half the color of the 4-4-4, and the 4-2-0 you have half of the 4-2-2. The "jagged" edges I'm seeing are due to the EX not sampling enough color information as it records to the cards.

The solution - to purchase a capture card and go from the SDI Output of the EX-3 to the capture card and capture my video directly to the computer. That way, I get at least a 4-2-2 signal into the computer. You can't get a full RGB signal out of the EX-3 but I can get a 4-2-2."

I asked about the video equipment Mark used because his looks very good and I'm hoping I can avoid buying a capture card for the SDI output (between $1,000 and $3,000 according to B&H Photo).

Thanks,

Scott

Mark,

Can you please share what camera you used in your chroma key training videos? Also, did you use a capture card (SDI output) to get your high quality?

Thanks,

Scott

I believe mark's got 2 pro cameras;

A parasonic P2 camera (which also records to card)

And a sony HVR-Z1U (which I believe he doesn't use as often as the parasonic).

Hi WVD,

When you say "writes to card" are you referring to internal cards (like I use in the Sony EX-3) or that his camera writes to a capture card?

Does Mark not post on this forum?

Thanks,

Scott

Well I meant that it also records to an internal card inside the comera, but then using P2-cards, instead of SxS-cards.

I'd say this means he isn't using 4:4:4 too... but I'm afraid you really have to wait for some conclusive answers until Mark himself replies.
