Hi All

Just need/want your inpout on the following lighting setup for a green screen shoot that im about to undertake.

Will have a 10 x 20' green screen, and was planning on ligjting the screen with 2 x 500w cool lights. then have a lady to light that is just going ot be talking (no moving about). I was going to light her with 3 x 500w cool lights. these 3 lights have the option of softboxes. 2 of the lights were to be key lights at the front and the 3rd was going to light her from the rear.

Will this work ok for a video shoot or am i going to be underpowered?

Cheers

Welcome to the forums Gary.
I don't know how bright the cool flow lights are but 500W in halogens are extremely bright. I use two on my green screen without a problem.

I think the lights you have will be just fine.

Do an even light on the screen and a 3 point light setup on the subject.

Hi Dave

That is what I was thinking of doing. Just wanted to know if I was on the right track. Its been many a year since I dabbled in Video work. Its gradually coming back to me, slowly but surely.

I just done the deal for the lights, so I am mega happy at present. Paid £315.00 (sterling) for:

3 x 85w (500w) cool type lights with stands and softboxes
2 x 85w (500w) cool type lights with stands
1 x 10' x 20' green screen cloth

Trying to get him to do a deal on a boom type stand at the moment but dont think he gonna do that cheap which is a shame. If he can do at £45 or less then I might get one, as I can get a boom stand on ebay for £49.00.

As for a stand/support for the green screen, I was just going to try and make one up out of some 2x2 from the local timber yard as dont really want to spend out £79.00 on a support for one.

How do you guys support your green screen, do you get a pro stand or do you hash something up with what you have?

Cheers

Tubetape has stands but if you have a large wall you can use push-pins to support a muslin screen.
I've seen others build frames using PVC piping as well which isn't too expensive.

I personally use some mic stands but only own a smaller green screen (about 8' x 9')

Hi Dave
I think it would be to expencive to get a stand posted over to the UK from Tubetape. shame as the prices seem to be good.

Just waiting for seller to get back on a good price for a proper stand so will see what happens. Watch this space.

Cheers Gary

Good vids on youtube by the way

Oh well I bit thew bullet and got a pro stand for my green screen. I thought as I was paying out all this money for lights etc I might as well spend another £70 and get a stand.

Not going to complain to much as I got just under 10% off the whole deal. I tried and tried to get more but he wernt budging.

Anyway, I got a very nice lighting setup on its way to me, along with a big green screen and stand for it to hang from. Already got my radio mic, but might need to renew my tripod as my current one is having a few problems keeping erect. hmmmmmmm. it keeps drooping hehehe.

All I can say is, thank god Im making some money on this production as by the time it is finished I will have spent just over £1000 in kit and duplication costs.

Have a fun weekend people

haha, yea a nice tripod is a must...I still have to get one myself. I have a nice Bogen that my dad used years ago for still photos but the head isn't fluid at all so I should swap that bit.

Yea video gear and such gets high in price quickly but the overall outcome shows when you have good gear.
I really should get some soft box lights myself but don't have any steady job and am I'm college so I am having the hardest time getting any type of work other than selling my DVDs.

HI Dave

It all comes to those that wait. And you have to start somewhere. I used to be a TV cameraman years ago (18 in fact. Eek) I then went self employed as an Editor. Things happened and long story short I stopped dead. Didnt touch an edit suite or a camera for nearly 5 years.

Luckily, the people who I made a Programme for 17 years ago came and asked me to make another. That was 3 years ago, its taken me that long to get over some demons. But Im back and amreally looking forward to doing this.

You never know, it might be the start of a new dawn, and get me back into something that I loved doing many years ago.

On your 3rd light on the subject, I would experiment with that one. You will probably get a better result if that was overhead, and maybe slightly to the rear. Sort of a hair light. If you light from the rear at a lower angle, you might get a slight siloette effect. Also, on the green screen lights, if you have barn doors or reflecters, I would try those as well, as the softboxes may be too soft to light the green screen effectively. Jerry Day has a great DVD on lighting (mainly for photography) and it has a seperate video for just green screen lighting. If you'd like to check it out, go to www.jerryday.com I found that video very informative.
