Hi, my name is Andy from Kent, England, United Kingdom.

Basically, i run a hardware review site, companies send me free computer stuff and i go on camera saying how good it is.

I sit on camera for a minute explaining what we're going to be looking at and then i talk about the product and show it in all it's glory. When i talk about the product, i want the background to be pure white as to look as professional as possible.

People still want to see photos after watching the video and hence i want the same result of a pure white background.

I tried a 80x80x80cm pop up light tent (what a waste of money that was) half of the products (cases and monitors) dont fit in it and the backgrounds they supplied are very transparant and full of creases.

So what i was thinking was to get a green screen and shoot on that and then (for video) chroma key out the green and exchange it with pure white (#FFFFFF), and then (for photos) magic wand the green out and replace with pure white (#FFFFFF)

Would this work?
Would i need any type of special lighting?

My budget is extremely tight so am trying to get this as cheap as possible.

Thanks for your help in advance,

Andy

Welcome to the forums Andy.
I to have some product reviews out on YouTube, (I call them Gear Reviews though...).

These days though it seems as if most sites that sell products are putting a video review feature in so the public can post their thoughts. Now most of them are done with cheap gear and some people have no clue what they are talking about when reviewing but I still think it draws attention away from those who take the time to do pro. quality reviews.

Anyways, yes the photoshop and chroma key trick will work.
I personally use a black or white canvas and clip on "daylight" lamps when taking photos of images for ebay. You see this done quite a bit.
Sometimes a pure white background doesn't work, you have to chose the background in relation to the product color.

Tubetape.com would be a nice place to buy a green screen. They also have some still image keying software which may work better than Photoshop...

I'm in the process of doing some experimentation in something simular. I am taking a photo of a person that I had taken, and opened it up in Microsoft paint, and colored everything around the subject grey. Next I will use the paint bucket and change the grey to green. You ask why grey, then green. Well. if you go green right away, you won't be able to see the pixels you missed. This way, after you change the grey to green, you can zoom in and check for any missed pixels. Once you're satisfied with your results, it is ready to be processed with which ever program you're using. I purchased the complete kit from TubeTape. With that you get a green screen, stand, software (FXhome PhotoKey), and a DVD with a bunch of digital backgrounds. The experiment I'm working on is to find a way to get the same results when a green screen setup is impractable. I will post my results when I finish my test.

OK guys, the results are in! cheers If you want to see the results, CLICK HERE

It actually turned out pretty good, concidering I don't have a tablet, and had to do all the coloring with the mouse. This proves that if your fairly accurate in coloring in the green around your subject, you can get decent results. This way is a lot of work, and I recommend if you have a green screen available, USE IT! But if you find yourself in a situation where the green screen can't be used, you still have another alternative.

Really not bad for this technique!

But you won't get the totall controll over your key compared to keying software.

And remember that keying is only the first part ok succesfully keying... matching the lighting conditions and colour of the background is a completely different story Wink

Good luck, WVD

I used FXhome Photokey to do my keying. I just colored the green by hand in Microsoft Paint. This was just a test to see if coloring in the background manually would work with the keying software. I definately wouldn't want to do it this way for every photo! Very Happy The Elvis Impersonator in the test photo got a chuckle out of it. His wife thought it was really neat, and mentioned that we could possibly do something simular for some of his future shows. Get photos of the venues, and add him in, and make posters to be displayed at the different venues. Then I got an idea for a future advertisement. "Go on your dream vaccation without ever leaving your house!" Very Happy
