Sony vs Sony
Mark - love your vids, thank you so much.
I'm trying to decide between a Sony HVR-Z1U for $1749 and a Sony HDR-FX7 for $1,999 (both new).
Will be used for shooting professional indoor HD green screen video of standing or seated subjects (little to no movement). Will most likely get a shotgun mic to go with.
Any thoughts are welcome... Are these overkill for the intended use?
Thanks!
Brian

Re: Sony vs Sony
Welcome to the forum Brian.
While I have not used a Sony HVR-Z1U, I have used the HDR-FX1 many times now and I do enjoy it. I would imagine both cameras would work for your chroma key screen but if I were buying, I would go with the lower priced Z1U as cnet has a few complaints on the latest FX7.
FX7 review:

Z1U review:

The Z1U reminds me more of the FX1 which is nice however all three (Z1U, FX1, FX7) do not offer XLR mic ports...
For home use, this isn't a huge deal...but if I were using this camera around the home and on the job I would look into a Canon....or even a field recorder...
If you plan to just use this cam around the house, also look into the Canon HV20 and 30. Both offer HD video recording and put out a very nice image....the price is quite low as well. Both will work well for chroma keying.
edit, my bad...yes the Z1U does have XLR inputs on board...
and yes I also want to know where you are getting this great deal.....but is it too good to be true?

The Z1U does have 2 XLR imputs.... I'd go with the Z1.
BTW, where did you find 'm for such a small amount of money?

Sony HVR-Z1U price
I found the low price through a simple Google search at an online store called "On Time Digital".
However, after some more research it looks like this is a shady company with a lot of consumer complaints. I guess if a deal sounds too good to be true, it really is.
After some more looking, the cheapest price I can find a new one for, from legitimate companies is a little over $3,000. Sorry to get anyone's hopes up
Having said that, is there another comparable & less expensive brand/model that anyone would recommend that supports HD video & external mic support?
Thanks!
Brian

Re: Sony vs Sony
yea the On Time Digital site looks and sounds iffy, I would stay away....
"Too good to be true" is a good one to follow.
I would stick with well known places such as B&H as you get a full coverage and a place you know you can contact if you need help.
